After many delays, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book Dune will finally be released on the big screen in October, coinciding with the HBO Max premiere. He has faced many obstacles in getting his film produced and viewed, but the title seems to be a recurring motif.

Dune is a mythological and emotionally packed hero’s journey about Paul Atreides, a bright and talented young man born into a tremendous destiny beyond his comprehension who must go to the universe’s most hazardous planet to secure the future of his family and people. Only those who can overcome their fear will live as evil powers clash for the planet’s sole supply of the most valuable resource in existence—a commodity capable of unleashing humanity’s greatest potential.

This will be the third time that Frank Herbert’s book has been adapted for the screen. In the 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky famously entered the franchise with ideas for a psychedelic ten-hour version starring Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, and Salvador Dali, with Pink Floyd providing the music. That sounds fantastic. Unfortunately, when Herbert visited the set in the United Kingdom, he discovered that $2 million of Jodorowsky’s $9.5 million budget had gone stolen. It had already been spent on pre-production by Jodorowsky. In addition, Herbert discovered that the script would result in a 14-hour feature. “It was the size of a phone book,” he later remembered. After the producers withdrew their money, Jodorowsky had no option but to stop down the project.
David Lynch had his opinion about the remake, and he had this to say about it. “I have no interest in Dune,” he says, but his problems are unrelated to Villeneuve. “Because it was a source of pain for me. It was a flop, and I didn’t get to see the final edit. This is a tale I’ve told a billion times. It’s not the film I had envisioned. Certain aspects of it appeal to me, but overall, it was a complete disaster for me.”
While he was ecstatic for fans to finally have a chance to see his Dune, he had this to say about the concurrent release: “With this move, AT&T has taken control of one of the most prestigious and significant film studios in history. There is no love for film or the audience in this place. It’s all about the survival of a telecommunications behemoth, which is presently saddled with a $150 billion debt. As a result, whereas Dune is about film and viewers, AT&T is about its own Wall Street survival. Given the failure of HBO Max so far, AT&T has chosen to sacrifice Warner Bros.’ whole 2021 slate in a desperate effort to pique the public’s interest.”
On October 1, 2021, Dune will be released in cinemas and on HBO Max.
Topics include Dune and IMAX.
