Stewart’s head coach and Herbst’s father, Shane Herbst, returns to the school as an assistant after a four-year hiatus.
Riley Herbst is returning to Stewart. Riley Herbst was a student at Stewart in the 2015-2016 school year, but left in January 2016 for personal reasons.

Stewart-Haas Racing has recently announced their intentions for a crucial part of the team. Riley Herbst will return to the No. 98 Ford Mustang for his second season with the Tony Stewart and Gene Haas co-owned NASCAR team.
On Monday, November 15, SHR released a press statement confirming that Herbst would continue to be sponsored by Monster Energy as he attempts another playoff participation. During the 2021 season, the beverage corporation will sponsor the No. 98 Ford for 29 races. Herbst also had Monster Energy as his principal sponsor throughout his time at Joe Gibbs Racing in 2020.
In a news statement, Herbst said, “Monster Energy has been a terrific partner.” “They’ve been with me for a long time, and having their support in my work means the world to me.” We’ve been close a couple times to bringing them to victory lane, and I’m hoping to get them there soon. I’m looking forward to working with them again in 2022 on the No. 98 Ford Mustang. This squad is in for a big year.”
Herbst competed for victories in the 2021 season.

Herbst competed on a regular basis during the 2021 season, however he did not reach Victory Lane. He finished in the top five five times and 13 times in the top ten. His best result was a third-place finish behind AJ Allmendinger and Austin Cindric at Bristol Motor Speedway, when they both wrecked as they crossed the finish line.
Herbst qualified for the playoffs based on points and battled for a position in the Round of Eight over the first three races. Two accidents and a suspension problem, however, ruined his playoffs, resulting in three straight results outside the top 25. Herbst failed to advance to the next round after falling below the cutline.
Herbst had a lot of problems in the playoffs, but he made a lot of progress to complete the year. Before finishing 10th at Martinsville Speedway, he had top-15 results at Texas Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway. Herbst finished fourth in Phoenix, ahead of AJ Allmendinger and Noah Gragson, who were also title contenders.
Herbst was praised by Stewart before to the playoffs.
Herbst has a difficult assignment heading into the 2021 season. Chase Briscoe, who moved up to the Cup Series and the No. 14 SHR Ford, left a place open for him. Briscoe only stayed in the No. 98 spot for a year, but he put up a great showing. He finished fourth overall in the standings, behind Cindric, Justin Allgaier, and Justin Haley, having won nine of the 33 races.
Herbst’s first season with SHR, and his second overall as a full-time Xfinity Series driver, was not guaranteed to replicate these stats. Stewart was fully aware of this, and he admitted that different drivers grow at various rates. When praising Herbst’s potential, the Hall of Famer heaped praise on him.
In an early September interview with Heavy, Stewart said, “I mean, believe me, when I got an Xfinity car, I tore up everything I drove.” “It took a long time for the light bulb to turn on for me to start succeeding. As a result, I believe it’s instances like that. Riley is a very young child, so the light switch might turn on at any time. And when it happens, I mean, as we’ve seen with both Cole [Custer] and Chase [Briscoe] in the past, he can go on a tear and go on a run.”
When Herbst returns to the No. 98 for the 2022 Xfinity Series season, he will have the chance to “flip this switch.” On Saturday, February 19, he will make his season debut at Daytona International Speedway.
