Messages poured in from Steelers fans, game fans, and coworkers from the instant Ben Roethlisberger pressed the Twitter button on his phone.

On January 27, the renowned Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback revealed that he will be hanging up his cleats and retiring from football.

Who better to get things started than “The Chin,” Bill Cowher, the renowned Hall of Fame head coach.

It’s difficult to top the two tweets above, but they come fairly close as a compilation.

Just seconds after the news came, one fan wrote, “Ben Roethlisberger officially announces his retirement.”

Another delighted admirer remarked, “Watching you from start to finish has really been an honor.” “It’ll be strange not seeing 7 on the pitch every Sunday in football.” Thank you for all you provided to this city, the fans, and this club. You are one of the best of all time. Take pleasure in the next stage of your life.

It’s been an honor to follow you from beginning to end. Football will be different now that there aren’t seven players on the field every Sunday. Thank you for all you provided to this city, the fans, and this club. You are one of the best of all time. Take pleasure in the next stage of your life. #ThankYou7 https://t.co/uRZ7QYyutV

“THANK YOU,” tweeted @TheSteelZone. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for delivering the city of Pittsburgh 18 years of worry-free quarterbacking. Forever a Pittsburgh Legend, 7″

Another admirer expressed his gratitude by tweeting a wonderful present he had received.

One of the most unique trinkets I’ve ever acquired. While wearing these cleats, Big Ben tossed three touchdown passes en route to a win against the Bengals. They’re personalized with his children’s names, and he signed both of them. pic.twitter.com/lHc35Hdgvu #ThankYou7

“That day has finally arrived,” remarked @SteelTwins. It’s unavoidable and necessary, yet it still brings a tear to the eye. Always my quarterback. In five years, I’ll see you in Canton.”

There are going to be a lot of memories like this fan’s: “My dad introduced me to #Steelers football in 2004 as a 10 year old kid. Right when Maddox went down, & Ben got his time to shine. It was that game. Ben is the reason I love football as much as I do. The ONLY qb I’ve known in my life as a fan. FOREVER GRATEFUL.”
